Berlin Olympics, 1936
An incredible group of seventy signatures collected in-person at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the majority fountain pen signatures on card (some cards multi-signed by team members), with two signed photographs. The highlight of the collection is a single 5.5" X 4" card signed by members of the U.S. team to include Jesse Owens (who adds "100 & 200 Meters, broad jump, Ohio State" beneath this signature), Cornelius Johnson (1913 - 1946), another African-American member of the team (just before he was decorated with his medal, Hitler famously left the stadium), Fritz Pollard Jr. (1894 - 1986) and Archie Williams (1915 - 1993). (A separate card is signed by other members of the U.S. team: Glenn Morris (1912 - 1974), Forrest Towns (1914 - 1991), Glenn Cunningham (1909 - 1988) and Glenn Hardin (1910 - 1975).) Other signatures include Dr. Theodor Lewald (1860 - 1947), President of the 1936 Olympic Organising Committee (who adds this title beneath his signature) and Pierre de Coubertin (1863 - 1937), the founder of the International Olympic Committee (who adds a six line comment about political reform and dates his signature in 1936 at "Olympiade XI"). The rest of the collection includes signatures of Sonja Henie (1912 - 1969), Reto Capadrutt (1912 - 1939) - signed photograph, Tilly Fleischer (1911 - 2005), Gustav Schafer (1906 - 1991), Paavo Nurmi (1897 - 1973), Charles Mathiesen (1911 - 1994), Cecilia Colledge (1920 - 2008), Elis Wiklund, Sven Eriksson (1907 - 1992), Jack Medica (1914 - 1985), Csik Ferenc (1913 - 1945), Konrad Frey (1909 - 1974), Matti Jarvinen (1909 - 1985), Ilmari Salminen (1902 - 1986), Franco Riccardi (1905 - ), Marjorie Gestring (1922 - 1992) and many, many others. An incredible collection from an historical event.
