"THE OLD BIKE IS RUNNING LIKE A NEW ONE"
Lawrence, T.E. (1888 - 1935)
A good two-page autograph letter signed by T.E. Lawrence ("Young T.E.S."), written from Southampton, 24th November 1933 and addressed to his RAF colleagues, "Dear Flight". Lawrence opens, "I'm guilty about the Baby: her arrival in complete and excellent condition should have been reported to you at once: but I had hopes of getting to Plymouth and seeing you all within a few days. So I put it off - and then had to put off going... and so on. I've not yet been able to get down. Nor have I touched the boat - yet. She stands quietly in the shed. Before the spring I hope to get the engine out and either reform it, or exchange it. It is very good of you to have looked after her all this while." He then goes into substantial detail relating to problems with an engine that has been causing "all sorts of difficulties. My brain does not hold a notion to cope with the job: but I'll have another dig at everybody ... to see if any brains can get up a wave". The rest of the letter is largely taken up with other difficulties, and possible resolutions, relating to other boats. He closes, "Please remember me to everybody... I shall hope to see you all again any week, now. The old bike is running like a new one" - a macabre reference to the motorbike on which he was to be tragically killed eighteen months later. In very fine condition.
