"I SEE NO REASON WHY A MAN SHOULD NOT WRITE ABOUT ANYTHING HE WANTS TO"
Faulkner, William (1897 - 1962)
An excellent autograph letter signed by William Faulkner. The author writes in green ink, in his typically spidery hand, to a William Stevens. In full, "Dear Mr. Stevens, Thank you for your letter about 'Jefferson' article. I see no reason why a man should not write about anything he wants to, granted he either knows about it or feels deeply and sincerely about it. Carry on with it, and good luck to you. W. Faulkner, Beverly Hills, Cal. 15 March 1937". 'Jefferson' was the fictional town Faulkner used in his work, based on the town of Oxford, Mississippi, where the author lived, on and off, for most of his life. In very fine condition, and together with the original hand-addressed Twentieth Century Fox embossed envelope which Faulkner has signed to the top left, "Wm. Faulkner". In very fine condition, with neat folds to the letter. Autograph letters of Faulkner rarely come onto the market, and this early and interesting example from his days as a Hollywood screenwriter is particularly desirable.
